The Surprisal is hosted by Burak Yenigun. We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how people use this website and find problems with its layout and navigation.

Website analytics

Clarity processes page and device information and interactions such as clicks and scrolling. It can create heatmaps and recordings of interactions with the website. These are reconstructions of website activity, not recordings of your camera or microphone. Microsoft may process your IP address to derive an approximate location.

We configure Clarity with analytics and advertising storage denied for every visitor, so Clarity operates without its analytics or advertising cookies. We do not send it names, email addresses or custom visitor identifiers. This limits recognition of returning visitors and journeys across pages; it does not mean that no data is processed.

We also count clicks on the Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube links, transcript downloads, and the “Send a surprise” button. A listening-link click does not tell us whether you listened to an episode.

For details about Microsoft's processing, see the Microsoft Privacy Statement and Clarity data collection documentation.

Hosting and external links

Cloudflare hosts this website and processes network requests to deliver and secure it. When you follow links to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube or other websites, their own privacy practices apply.
